Signs your AC needs a look

  • It runs but the house stays warm

Air coming out of the vents feels cool-ish at best, and the thermostat never reaches the setting on a hot afternoon.

  • Ice on the lines or the coil

Frost on the copper line outside or on the indoor coil usually points to low refrigerant or an airflow problem.

  • The outdoor unit hums but won't start

A humming condenser with a fan that won't spin is often a failed capacitor or contactor, and it's worth shutting off before it does more damage.

  • Short cycling

The system kicks on and off every few minutes instead of running steady cycles. That wears out parts and leaves rooms sticky.

  • Water around the furnace

A plugged condensate drain or a cracked pan can leak onto the basement floor all summer without anyone noticing.

  • Energy bills creeping up

If you're paying more to stay less comfortable, the system is losing efficiency somewhere.

What we do for central air

We work on all makes and models, not just the brands we sell.

  • AC repair

Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, refrigerant leaks, drain problems and control issues, diagnosed and fixed on any brand.

  • Spring tune-ups

Coil cleaning, electrical checks, refrigerant pressures and airflow tested before the first hot week, not during it.

  • Central air replacement

New systems sized to your house, as an independent American Standard dealer and Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor.

  • Heat pumps

Central heat pumps that cool in summer and carry part of the heating load in spring and fall, paired with your furnace.

  • Emergency service

When the AC quits in the middle of a heat wave, call. Someone picks up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Why an AC stops cooling, and what we do about it

Most "AC not cooling" calls come down to three things: refrigerant charge, airflow, or a failing part in the outdoor unit. Each one has a different fix, so the first job is figuring out which one you have.

Charge, airflow or compressor

Refrigerant doesn't get used up. If the charge is low, there's a leak, and adding more without finding it just means another call next summer. We test pressures and temperatures, look for the leak, and tell you whether it's worth repairing.

Airflow problems are just as common: a clogged filter, a dirty indoor coil, a weak blower or ductwork that's too small. A compressor or fan motor on its way out shows up in the electrical readings before it fails completely.

Repair or replace

A newer system with a failed capacitor is an easy repair. An older system with a leaking coil and an expensive refrigerant is a different conversation. We price the repair against a replacement side by side, and if fixing it makes more sense, we say so.

If replacement is the right call, we size the new air conditioner to your house rather than matching the old unit's tonnage, and we look at whether a heat pump or a ductless mini-split fits better.

What to expect on the visit

We check the thermostat, the filter and the indoor coil, then the outdoor condenser: electrical components, fan, coil condition and refrigerant pressures. You hear what failed and why before any work starts, and you get a follow-up call afterward to make sure it held.

What affects the cost

Repairs depend on the part, the refrigerant your system uses and how hard the equipment is to reach. Replacement cost depends on system size and efficiency, whether the indoor coil and lineset need replacing too, and any ductwork changes. We quote it in writing before we start.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Call and ask. A real person answers.

Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?

The usual causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty filter or coil restricting airflow, or a failing capacitor or compressor in the outdoor unit. Check the filter and make sure the outdoor unit is running, then give us a call so we can test it properly.

Should I just add refrigerant?

Not without finding out why it's low. A properly working system doesn't lose refrigerant, so a low charge means a leak. We locate it and give you the options for fixing it.

How often should my AC be serviced?

Once a year, ideally in spring before the first heat. A tune-up catches weak capacitors, dirty coils and drain problems while they're still small. Our maintenance plans cover it on a schedule.

Do you only work on the brands you sell?

No. We repair and maintain all makes and models of central air conditioners and heat pumps.

Do you offer emergency AC repair?

Yes. We offer 24/7 emergency service across Washington County, St. Croix County and the river valley towns.
