Signs your ductwork is the problem

  • Uneven temperatures

One room is always cold in winter and hot in summer, no matter what the thermostat says.

  • Weak airflow from some vents

Registers at the end of a long run barely move air while others blow hard.

  • Noisy ducts

Whistling, rattling or booming when the blower starts usually means undersized or poorly supported ductwork.

  • High bills with no clear cause

Leaky ducts in attics, crawlspaces and garages can lose a meaningful share of the air you're paying to heat and cool.

  • Dust around registers

Dust streaks around vents or a dusty basement can point to leaks pulling dirty air into the system.

Fixing rooms that never get comfortable

When one room won't cooperate, people often assume the furnace or AC is too small. More often the equipment is fine and the air just isn't getting there.

Common causes

Long or undersized duct runs, too many turns, crushed flex duct and disconnected joints all cut airflow. Rooms without a return air path pressurize when the door is closed, and the supply air can't get in. Additions are often tied into ductwork that was never sized for the extra space.

Options, from simple to complete

Sometimes the fix is a damper adjustment, a sealed joint or a new return. Sometimes a run needs to be resized or rerouted. For an addition or a room the ductwork can't reach well, a ductless mini-split can be the better answer.

When a home's whole duct system is undersized or failing, we design a new one around the house, so the furnace and AC can actually do their job.

What to expect on the visit

We check temperatures and airflow room by room, look at the furnace and the main trunk lines, and follow the runs to the problem rooms wherever they're accessible. Then we explain what we found and lay out the options from the simplest fix up.

What affects the cost

Access is the biggest factor. Open basement ceilings are straightforward; finished ceilings, tight attics and crawlspaces take more time. The amount of new duct, the number of rooms and whether drywall needs to be opened all play a part. We quote it in writing before we start.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Call and ask. A real person answers.

Why is one room in my house always colder than the rest?

Usually it's airflow: a long or undersized duct run, a leak or disconnect, or no return air path from the room. Exterior walls, windows and the room's position over a garage make it worse. We measure the airflow to find which it is.

Is duct sealing worth it?

When ducts run through unconditioned spaces like attics, crawlspaces or garages, sealing them is one of the more effective ways to improve comfort and cut wasted energy.

Can you add ductwork to a finished basement or addition?

Yes. We design and install new runs, and we'll tell you whether your existing furnace can handle the extra space or whether a mini-split makes more sense.

Do you clean ducts?

Yes, after remodeling, pest problems or visible buildup. We'll tell you honestly if it isn't needed.
