Signs your indoor air needs attention

  • Dry air all winter

Static shocks, dry skin, cracked lips and gaps opening in wood floors and trim are classic signs of low winter humidity.

  • Dust that comes right back

If you dust on Saturday and it's back by Tuesday, your filtration isn't catching much.

  • Allergies that are worse indoors

Pollen, pet dander and dust circulate through the ductwork when filters are cheap, clogged or bypassed.

  • Musty or stale smells

Odors when the system kicks on can come from the indoor coil, a dirty drain pan or the ductwork.

  • Condensation on windows

Too much moisture can be as much of a problem as too little, and it shows up on cold windows first.

  • Filtration

Media filter cabinets and upgraded filters that catch far more than a standard one-inch filter, with fewer changes.

  • Whole house humidifiers

Humidifiers mounted on the furnace that add moisture to every room during our dry Minnesota and Wisconsin winters.

  • Air purifiers and electronic air cleaners

Whole-home air cleaners that capture fine particles as air passes through the system, not just in one room.

  • UV lights

UV lamps installed near the indoor coil to keep mold and bacteria from growing on wet surfaces.

  • Duct cleaning

Cleaning for ductwork after a remodel, a pest problem or years of buildup, plus repair of leaky or disconnected runs.

  • Air quality testing

Testing to see what's actually in your air before recommending equipment, so you're not buying a fix for the wrong problem.

Fixing indoor air the right way

Air quality problems have specific causes. Matching the fix to the cause is the difference between equipment that helps and equipment that just adds a maintenance chore.

What causes poor indoor air

In our climate the biggest one is humidity. Cold winter air holds very little moisture, so once it's heated indoors the house dries out. In summer the opposite happens, and an oversized air conditioner can cool the house without pulling enough moisture out.

Dust, dander and pollen come in through doors, windows and leaky return ducts. A filter that's too restrictive or poorly sealed lets air bypass it entirely.

Choosing between options

A better filter cabinet is usually the first step and solves a lot on its own. A whole house humidifier is the fix for dry winter air. UV lights target growth on the indoor coil. Air purifiers make sense when someone in the house has allergies or asthma and better filtration isn't enough.

We'll tell you which of these is worth doing in your house, and which isn't.

What to expect on the visit

We look at your furnace or air handler, the filter setup, the return ductwork and the indoor coil, and ask what you're noticing and where. If testing makes sense, we'll recommend it. Most add-ons install in a few hours without changing your existing system.

What affects the cost

Cost depends on the equipment, whether your furnace has room for it, and whether a humidifier needs a water line and drain run to it. Ongoing costs like filters, humidifier pads and UV bulbs are worth factoring in, and we'll go over those too.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Call and ask. A real person answers.

What humidity should my house be in winter?

Lower than you might think when it's very cold outside. Too much humidity condenses on windows and inside walls. A whole house humidifier with an outdoor-temperature control adjusts for that automatically.

Do I need an air purifier or just a better filter?

For most homes, a properly sealed media filter cabinet makes the biggest difference for the money. Whole-home air purifiers are worth considering when allergies or asthma are a concern.

How often should ducts be cleaned?

Not on a fixed schedule. It's worth doing after major remodeling, signs of pests or visible buildup in the registers and returns. We'll take a look and tell you honestly whether it's needed.

Can you add these to my existing furnace?

Yes. Filtration, humidifiers, air cleaners and UV lights all install on your current system, whatever the brand.
