When a mini-split makes sense

  • One room is always the problem

The bonus room over the garage, the sunroom or the upstairs bedroom that's ten degrees off from the rest of the house.

  • An addition or remodel

Extending ductwork to a new space is often expensive, disruptive or simply not possible. A ductless system skips it.

  • An older home without ducts

Homes heated by boilers or radiators can get quiet, efficient air conditioning without tearing into walls and ceilings.

  • Window units you're tired of

A mini-split cools the same room more quietly and frees up the window for good.

  • Porches, garages and workshops

Spaces you'd like to use in more than one season, with heat in the shoulder months and cooling in summer.

  • Single-zone systems

One outdoor unit and one indoor head for a single room or open space. The simplest fix for a problem room.

  • Multi-zone systems

One outdoor unit serving several rooms, each with its own indoor unit and its own temperature setting.

  • Ductless heat pumps

Mini-splits heat as well as cool. Cold-climate models can carry a real share of the heating in a Minnesota or Wisconsin winter, alongside your furnace or boiler.

  • Service and cleaning

Indoor coil and blower wheel cleaning, drain checks and diagnostics so the system keeps running quietly and efficiently.

Ductless mini-splits, explained

A mini-split is a heat pump without the ductwork. A compact outdoor unit connects to one or more indoor units through a small line set, usually run through a single hole in the wall.

Why rooms end up too hot or too cold

Rooms over garages, additions and finished attics usually sit at the end of a long duct run, or were never connected to one. Sun exposure, extra windows and thin insulation make it worse. Turning the thermostat down for the whole house to cool one room wastes energy and leaves everywhere else too cold.

Picking the right setup

Indoor units come in a few styles: wall-mounted heads, ceiling cassettes and slim ducted units that hide in a closet or soffit. We size each one to the room it serves, based on square footage, windows, insulation and how you use the space.

If you're also thinking about heating, we'll talk through how a ductless heat pump would work alongside your existing furnace or boiler and what's realistic for our winters.

What installation looks like

Most single-zone installs are done in a day. We mount the indoor unit, set the outdoor unit on a pad or wall bracket, run the line set and drain, then pressure test, evacuate and start the system up. We walk you through the remote and the settings before we leave.

What affects the cost

The number of zones, the style of indoor unit, the distance between indoor and outdoor units and any electrical work needed all play a part. A system built for cold-climate heating costs more than a cooling-focused one. We quote it in writing after we've seen the space.

Common questions

Don't see yours? Call and ask. A real person answers.

Can a ductless mini-split heat my home in winter?

Yes. Ductless heat pumps heat as well as cool, and cold-climate models are built for northern winters. In most homes here we pair them with an existing furnace or boiler rather than relying on them alone. We'll tell you what to expect for your space.

How many rooms can one system cover?

A single-zone system handles one room or open area. Multi-zone systems connect several indoor units to one outdoor unit, each with its own temperature control.

Do mini-splits need maintenance?

Yes. Clean or rinse the indoor filters every few weeks during heavy use, and have the indoor coil, blower wheel and drain cleaned periodically so it stays quiet and doesn't develop odors.

Is a ductless AC better than a window unit?

It's quieter, more efficient, doesn't block a window, and also heats. It also costs more up front, so it makes the most sense for rooms you use every day.
